Each tapestry handstitched, hundreds of hours, A woman's heart in every thread
At Khushi, hundreds of rural women in Bangladesh are stitching their way to independence. Every tapestry you bring home pays for school fees, family meals, medicine, and a seat at the table in her own household. This is Nakshi Katha — a craft so rooted in its soil it carries a Geographical Indication tag, passed down through generations of women. When you buy one, you're not just collecting art. You're backing a quiet revolution, one stitch at a time.
The Story of Nakshi Katha
A thousand-year craft, stitched by the women of Bengal — mapped in four chapters.
ORIGIN
First kantha-like stitching emerges in rural Bengal. Women layer worn saris into quilts — the seed of a craft passed hand to hand for a thousand years.
FOLK ART
Kantha blossoms into formal folk art. Motifs grow elaborate — lotuses, peacocks, the Tree of Life — each stitch a story, passed mother to daughter.
PARTITION
Bengal is divided. Kantha endures as one cultural thread that no border could cut — a quiet craft binding what politics tore apart.
PROTECTED
Nakshi Kantha holds Geographical Indication status. Bangladesh is formally recognized as the craft's cultural home — a tradition the world agrees cannot be copied.
